OWLS

OWLS, Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors, is a new group at First Congo that was initiated this spring to serve the large and vital segment (20%) of our congregation that falls into the over-60 age group. Its purpose is to support and encourage older members of our church to stay engaged, active and involved in their lives and in the church community.

While many adults waltz through their golden years without much difficulty, we recognize that there are many who have certain age-related physical and spiritual needs. The goal of our OWLS ministry is to sponsor a variety of programs that are uniquely suited to meeting the challenges of life after 50, as well as to promote opportunities for intergenerational relationships and spiritual growth.

We encourage senior men and women to stay as active as possible and to continue growing mentally and spiritually, even during the later years. By participating in the programs offered by OWLS, members will find fellowship, facts and fun — supporting the widely-held conviction that the later years of life can be years of promise, faith and joy.

As the OWLS say, “We don’t give a hoot about age”!

Whooo and what have the OWLS been doing?

Co-chairs Mary Helen Robertson and Janice Johnson, have been working with Kent Taylor, Thurb Stowell, Marion Kierscht, and Marilyn Higdon in putting together a great line-up of programs, including its first event in November:

Movie & Popcorn — Tues, Nov 6 at 7pm.  Come hoot and holler with the OWLS as we watch the highly-acclaimed and entertaining film, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a movie about retirees starting a new life in India.

Another event is being planned for March 9, and a Senior Sunday Worship Service on May 19. Please watch Gatherings for more information.
